ABOUT JIU JITSU

Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art, self defense system and grappling sport that focuses on ground fighting, using various throws, grappling techniques and submission holds. In 1882, Ryu, the multiple schools of Japanese Jiu-Jitsu were combined to create the Japanese art of Kodokan Judo. From this art, Jiu-Jitsu was born. Jiu-Jitsu promotes the principle that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend them selves against a bigger, stronger assailant using leverage and proper techniques; most notably, by applying joint locks and chokeholds to defeat them. Contenders train in Jiu-Jitsu to prepare for Gi (Sport Grappling) Tournaments, No-Gi (Submission Wrestling) and Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) Competition or Self-Defense. Sparring, commonly referred to as rolling, and live drilling play a major role in training. A premium is placed on performance, especially in competition.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT JIU JITSU

Below is is the daily outline given to our athletes to assist them in their journey. A better understanding of a complete training methodology allows athletes to focus on key learning points,  in order to incorporate them into their own personal game plans.

Concept - The overall intent of what is being covered for the class.

Mechanics - Break down of the individual movements.

Technique - Individual movements strung together.

Strategy - Tactical approaches to the application of the techniques.

With these things in mind, ensure you have a comfortable Jiu-Jitsu learning environment that isn’t stressful as soon as you walk on the mats. The instructor should welcome well thought out questions regarding what is being taught at the time and be able to answer in a clear and concise manner

The training environment is crucial; the average time it takes for someone to earn their Jiu-Jitsu black belt is 8 to 10 years, but the journey should be a rewarding and life-changing path that will affect you more than just on the mats.

Regardless of age, sex, body type, strengths or weaknesses, we'll always have room for personal growth in Jiu-Jitsu. The best realization is that you never truly reach an end state in this sport, you only expand your understanding of a limitless problem.

Finding the right place to pursue this journey may take some time; DON’T GIVE UP. It may be a somewhat frustrating process; DON’T GIVE UP. Once you find that right place with the right people, it will become an incredible vehicle for self-discovery and development, so seek until you find,  BUT WHATEVER YOU DO, DON’T GIVE UP.

BJJ BELT RANKING SYSTEM

The BJJ program consists of a belt ranking system that begins at white belt and progresses to black belt.  Each belt level consists of specific techniques in 7 major categories; takedowns, sweeps, guard passes, submissions, defenses, escapes, and combinations.  Techniques begin with fundamentals and become more difficult as each level is reached.  In addition each belt level has a corresponding number of techniques for each category.  The goal for each of us should be to become a Master, the epitome of the professional warrior.

During your Jiu-Jitsu Journey you will be tested physically, mentally, and socially. You will have your confidence and ego tested. You will experience the almighty slump. You will experience pain and frustration. You will have doubts and experience inadequacy. You will bleed and you will want to quit. If you stick with it, you will become stronger than you could ever imagine.

At Combat Base Texas - Shebaro Jiu Jitsu, we will never charge for stripes or belt promotion, nothing is given, everything is earned. We hold a belt promotion ceremony twice a year, once in the summer and once in the fall.
